Put your hands up if you have read the following in the November 2010 White Dwarf and think it's a pretentious 'you must buy this book or you will never know how to play a fantasy game' pile of advertising crap?
"The Warhammer rulebook contains 528 full-colour pages packed full of rules, background and gaming ideas. There can be no finer resource to guide your fantasy battles. It's got everything a book needs to keep even the most voracious Warhammer fan busy reading, daydreaming and especially fighting out amazing battles for many a happy hour" - page 81, WD371, inset box, top right corner
I mean, come on. This makes it sound as if it's the ONLY book out there for gamers and without it you won't even be able to breathe, let alone play any games. And to top it off - there ARE other fantasy battle games. For example Kings of War (Mantic), Hordes of the Things, Dwarf Wars and the Reaper's Warlord, to name a few.
Yes, it's true... the "we're-the-top" GW attitude is growing up.
For now I think this attitude is ridiculous, because the poor quality of their products (I'm talking about the new line of fantasy miniatures) and their exorbitant prices... and all of us know the Golden Age is ended.
Like you said there are thousands of games, first of all Kings of War, I think Mantic is doing a great job (in the right way).
I discovered too late that Alessio Cavatore, the game designer of Kings of War, is here in Italy at the Lucca Comics & Games annual convention. DAMN! I miss it!
+ Other planes lie beyond the reach Of normal sense and common roads But they are no less real Than what we see or touch or feel. +
I can suggest an old game called "Fantasy warriors" available in PDF format for free from Grenadier games. Far better than WFB in my opinion.
3rd ed WFB was pretty good, 4th was interesting, but went downhill from there. one thing that WFB always did badly was heros, was too overpowerful. Have a look at FW, they do large scale combat in a very interesting way.
When I finally get my armies back (Dwarves, Chaos and Humans, 10,000+ points each on the WFB scale) I'll certainly be looking to play FW instead of WFB.
You don't stop playing games when you get old, you get old when you stop playing games.
