Fantasy Flight announces new edition of Descent

Billiam Babble
I didn't collect this one first time round but the card based dungeon-crawlers is about to return in second edition form:

Friend of mine jumped the gun a while ago and bought the first version. Hes still trying to get through the rules, and I expect him to be done with that in 2015 or something :p
Really tempted to buy this second version, but I know Ill feel bad for my friend.

Nice one Billiam

I got the first edition of Descent a a while ago on Fleebay as prices are currently pretty low (£40).

It's a great resource, but I had few fairly large issues with the rules being a bit arbitrary, more akin to a computer game than an RPG (where rules usually attempt to create a credible semblance of reality). The included quests all way too long and the included flavour text is pretty paltry in my opinion.

The core combat mechanic, and the components are fantastic however! I really like some of the models ..and this is the great shame; with a bit of work it could have been The Best Dungeon-crawler I've Ever Played (statements that bold deserve capitals and bold text ).

This tragedy spurred me on to finish a rule set for an RPG/campaign version of vanilla Descent, and a starter campaign to go with it. If anyone else here gets interested in first edition I'll post it up, as my group have had some fun with it, and it's fairly thorough

It is hard work to convince some members of the group that I'm not a sadist however (that a particular boss monster required 35 lives when they've just run into the last room at the end of the heroes turn with hardly any pre-thought whatsoever caused quite a lively debate!), so if the second edition is playable out of the box, it would take some of the pressure off me, and I might be able to play as one of the heroes for a change.

Being a sucker for little men in twisty corridors, I'm watching this one with some interest..

If you do get a game of first edition in, let us know how it went. Didn't realise anyone here had any real interest in Descent.

Last time I saw a new copy,  the shop wanted at least £90.
The Amazon prices have been all over the place - when it's available - which is always a sign a game is out of print.  I avoided in the past because I was worried I'd be sucked into a world of "booster packs" and expansion decks.  Also there didn't seem to be a solo play option.  I'm really into solo-play since I can't always round up gamer friends at short notice.  Does anyone know if there was a solo play option in the original edition?

I'm forever trying to sum up these type of games, but I think that this is one of the best definitions yet.

hiya Samuel.

A little late to this message party, but I too picked up 1st Ed Descent several months. I for one would love the opportunity to take a look at your moded/house rules for the game. The group I'm trying to play with is a little new to gaming so anything I can use to make this easier or more common-sense for them would be great.

Would these just be rule changes so that they can still be used in the campaigns included with the game?

Thanks!

Hi Midknight,

I found a .pdf of the house rules I made and some starter quests. You could ignore the rule sections on glyphs, temples and conquest, as I didn't extend the campaign as far as I had originally wanted to. The birth of my baby daughter has ceased further progress for the moment .

You could use these rules with the quests included with the base game I guess. Just treat the glyphs on the map as items that can be picked up.

I hope you find something of use!

Hi guys! Is any Descent player there or nobody still cares?
Did you have ever tried the 2nd edition?
I recieved it for my birthday (fiancée gift, editor's note), and I started a journey into the painting after years!
I'm curious to know your thoughts. My first impression was really positive (except fo the movement rules).

@ Mortis, I think you already know this game, but if not, there's an interesting dice mechanic you should like (or hate).

Obviously a picture for encouragement:
